2023 Runner Instructions

Welcome to all of you and thank you for being part of the 2023 event!

The race takes place this Sunday at 7:50 AM.  Please take a few moments to read these important instructions to ensure all participants have a smooth race day.

Packet Pick-Up
The best time to pick up your bib and t-shirt is on Saturday, April 23rd between 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM at RnJ Sports, 11910-R Parklawn Drive, Rockville. Additional parking is located in the back of the store (you will need to walk around the building to the  front entrance).  Please come to packet pickup with your bib number in hand for a faster and more efficient pickup. You can find your bib number using the "Find a Participant" tool on our website.

Can’t make it on Saturday? A limited packet pickup will take place on race morning (Sunday, April 24th) at 6:30 AM near the start of the race at Redland Road. Please plan to arrive early. Again, we strongly encourage attending packet pickup on Saturday.

Race Day Registration
There are limited spots available at packet pickup on race morning, so tell a friend!  Pre-registration however, is strongly encouraged.

Getting to the Race
DO NOT take Metro to the race start. The first train of the day arrives at Shady Grove at 8:10 AM, which means you will arrive at least 20 minutes after the start of the race and will not be able to run!

**Parking for participants is located near the start, in the Shady Grove Metro parking lots. The closest lot to the race is the 3-story garage. The easiest way to get there is from I-370 into Metro parking lot. Parking at the finish will be in the paid parking garages at Pike & Rose.

If you cannot drive yourself or be dropped off, Ride-On bus and Metrobus both have early morning runs. You can also use a rideshare or taxi service. Riding a bicycle to the start would be a wonderful and green option.

Bag Check
We will transport your gear bags from the start to the finish.  PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN BAG!  We strongly recommend using a bag that can be closed, such as with a zipper.  Please label your bag with your bib number clearly and underline your number.

The Start
Please seed yourself according to your expected finish time.  We will have pacers to help you meet your finish goal.  Find the appropriate pacer and line up behind them.  Please DO NOT line up at the front of the pack if you cannot keep up with the blistering pace of the lead runners.  We do not want anyone to be trampled or tripped. Age groups awards will be conducted on net time (once you cross the mat), so there is no need to rush the front of the line unless you think you can win the race.

The race will start promptly at 7:50 AM.  There will be one start and no waves.  The race will be kicked off by our lead car, provided by Porsche.

On the Course
Run fast, have fun, and ALWAYS follow the directions of course marshals and the police.  After the first half mile, it’s a straight shot down Rockville Pike. There will be water at approximately mile 2 and water and Gatorade at approximately mile 4. Thank a volunteer and a police officer.  They all got up even earlier than you did to make sure you had a great race!

At the Finish
Just after mile 6, participants will make a right turn onto Rose Avenue to our finish festival at Pike & Rose!  You will find water and Gatorade just after you cross the finish line.  Bag check will be located just beyond that.

Grab some snacks on Grand Park Avenue from Call Your Mother, Pinstripes, and Summer House, listen to the DJ, visit with our sponsors, and explore all the offerings of Pike & Rose.  Patronize a business or two to thank them for hosting us!

Be sure to stop by Charm City Run - Gaithersburg's booth in the finish festival to enter for a chance to win a $200 gift card and other prizes! No need to be present to win.

If you, your friends, or family are looking for a post-race meal, you can enjoy a sandwich at Call Your Mother, Sunday brunch at Pinstripes, chicken at Nando’s or brunch at Summer House!

Awards
All cash and age group awards will be mailed a few weeks after the race, but we will announce awards for pictures around 9:30 AM.

Getting Home
Return to Shady Grove via North Bethesda Metro (formerly White Flint).  You may also use rideshare or simply have family or a friend give you a ride. Ride-On and Metro bus are also options. Remember to bring cash, credit card, a loaded Smartrip card, etc. with you for the ride back.
